who travel abroad for fertility treatment.
Please click here to download the full report.
This recent report showed:
62% of UK patients interviewed looked overseas for egg donation.
34% of UK patients interviewed looked overseas because of difficulty accessing treatment in the UK.
37% of UK patients looked overseas because of failed cycles in the UK.
28% of UK patients interviewed looked overseas for better quality of care.
26% of UK patients interviewed looked overseas for anonymous donation.
A HFEA study in 2010 showed the average age of a UK treatment seeker to be 35 years old – this study showed the average age of treatment seekers abroad was 38, which reflects going through treatment in the UK, failing and then looking overseas. This scenario represented 78% of patients who had had one or more unsuccessful IVF attempts in the UK.
All reasons listed for overseas IVF were:
Shortage of donor gametes in the UK
Long UK waiting times
Cost of treatment
Better success rates overseas
Dissatisfaction with care in the UK
Treatment in a less stressful environment
Age of treatment seeker
Choice of donors overseas
For multiple embryo transfer
Convenience
Age of UK donors
Anonymity of donors in other countries
Overseas clinic reputation
As a ‘last chance’
To try something new
Treatment not available in the UK
It is estimated that 85% of UK IVF cycles are now self funded by the patient.
